The Market Lens

The Three Wins

The Masters Tournament reminds us that greatness rarely happens in a straight line. Winning once is special. Winning twice is impressive. Winning three times? That takes resilience, discipline, and the ability to recover after inevitable setbacks.  Markets operate much the same way.  Historically, market cycles tend to move through repeating patterns — expansion, contraction, and recovery. Over the last several years, we’ve experienced all three:

Win #1: Expansion
Strong earnings growth, improving corporate margins, and resilient consumer spending drove markets higher. Corporate balance sheets remained healthy, and innovation — particularly across technology, healthcare, and infrastructure — continued to support growth.

Win #2: Pullback
As interest rates rose and inflation pressures emerged, markets recalibrated. Volatility returned. Leadership rotated. Investors were reminded that markets do not move in straight lines.

Win #3: Stabilization and Repositioning
Now we’re seeing a more balanced environment. The Federal Reserve has signaled a more measured approach, and earnings remain generally constructive. Markets are adjusting —as capital rotates toward sectors showing durable fundamentals beyond just mega-cap technology.

Like a champion golfer navigating Augusta’s most difficult holes, markets often revisit familiar terrain — highs, corrections, recoveries — before achieving new milestones.  The key is not avoiding the ups and downs.
It’s staying disciplined through them.

Beyond the Balance Sheet

Economic data remains mixed but resilient.

  • Employment remains stable, though hiring has cooled from peak levels.

  • Inflation continues to be elevated although it is lower compared to prior highs.

  • Corporate earnings remain generally positive, though growth has normalized.

  • Interest rates are widely expected to gradually decline over time, though the path may not be linear.

Periods of volatility are not unusual in a maturing cycle. In fact, they are often necessary for long-term sustainability.
